Dr. Avi Shelemay opened Capital Periodontics in Barrhaven in November of 2008. In addition to running his practice, Dr. Shelemay is currently a Clinical Instructor at the University of Toronto School of Dentistry. At U of T, Dr. Shelemay works with the Periodontal graduate residents. He teaches periodontal surgery including gum grafts, and the placement of dental implants. He also co-runs LITE (Live Implant Training and Education) which offers hands on training to general dentists. Before moving to Ottawa, Dr. Shelemay was an Assistant Professor (part-time) with the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto and staff periodontist at Mount Sinai Hospital. He also maintained a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in Toronto. Dr. Shelemay is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Periodontology. He obtained his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1996, and subsequently completed a one year internship at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Shelemay completed his Master of Science degree and specialty training in Periodontology at the University of Toronto in 2002. His research focused on osseointegration and how implant surface features regulate optimal healing and maintenance of soft and hard tissue levels around dental implants.
Dr. Shelemay and his wife Elisa have two daughters, Leetal and Michaela. He enjoys spending time with his family and their adorable puppy. Dr. Shelemay recently earned his pilot’s license and when the Ottawa weather cooperates he loves to fly! Dr Shelemay is fluent in English, Hebrew and Italian.
